Four things a route line cannot tell you, answered before you go.
Ascent counted the way legs count it, with the steep mile flagged before you find it. Not the difference between two heights: every rise on the line, added up, and the bit where the contours crowd marked on the map before you meet it on the hill.

A finish time from your pace, not a stranger's, and the sunset for that day in that valley. Summit knows how long your last ten walks took and works forward from the bus you want to catch, so the plan says when to be off the top.

Every spring, tap and stream on the line, with the ones that dry up in August marked as such. Carry two litres instead of four when the third spring is on the map and known to be running.

The last service from the end of the walk, and the one before it, so the plan has a spare. Timetables from the operators, refreshed nightly, read against your finish time; if the spare goes too, the plan tells you the night before.

The maps are the good ones, licensed properly, and they work with no signal. That is what the coffee pays for.
